Welcome to the future.
With local authorities across England struggling to fund adult social care, Northamptonshire County Council is planning to introduce a £50 charge for some social care assessments.
We think this is likely to be the first of many cases where councils try to charge for services related to the provision of adult social care.
As the article explains, despite a key principle in the Care Act being people’s right to assessment of their care needs, Northamptonshire County Council plan to charge £50 for such assessments where they are for self-funders.
The Alzheimer’s Society are rightly raising concerns that this could add another barrier for those in need of support.
“In these times of reduced funding from central government, our current consultation about how self-funders pay for care and support seeks to make explicitly clear what is the council’s role and what are the expectations of the service user if they are eligible and able to make a financial contribution.”
